Shopify Script Tags Deprecation: Act Before 1 October
Shopify blocks new script tags from 1 October 2026 and stops running them on 1 March 2027. Here is how to audit your store and what to fix first.
Shopify is retiring one of the oldest ways apps inject code into a storefront. The Shopify script tags deprecation begins on 1 October 2026 — eleven days from today — when apps can no longer create or update script tags. Nothing visibly breaks that morning. The date that breaks things is 1 March 2027, when Shopify stops injecting existing script tags into storefronts at all. Any app still relying on them simply stops doing its job that day.
Both dates come from the official developer changelog published on 24 August 2026. This guide turns that note into store-owner language: what a script tag is, what might go quiet in your store, how to audit your apps in half an hour, and what to ask the people who built them.
What a script tag is, in plain language
When you install an app that adds something to the front of your store — a sticky “Buy now” bar, a currency switcher, a cookie banner, a size-chart popup, a loyalty badge — that app has to get its JavaScript onto your pages somehow. For more than a decade, the quickest route was a script tag: the app asked Shopify to load a file on every storefront page, and Shopify did it automatically. No theme editing, no merchant action, no visible trace in your admin.
That convenience is also the problem. Script tags load on every page whether they are needed or not, they are invisible to you, and they keep running long after an app is half-forgotten. Shopify’s replacement is the opposite by design: an app embed block shipped inside a theme app extension, which you switch on and off yourself in the theme editor. For anything that only measures behaviour — analytics, conversion tracking, ad pixels — the replacement is a web pixel, which needs no action from you.
One important limit on the scope: this change covers script tags with a display scope of online_store. Script tags scoped to the order status page were already covered by an earlier, separate deprecation.
The Shopify script tags deprecation: two deadlines
| Date | What Shopify does | What you notice in the store |
|---|---|---|
| 1 October 2026 | The scriptTagCreate and scriptTagUpdate mutations return a user error, and the ScriptTag REST Admin API resource rejects POST and PUT. | Nothing, at first. Existing script tags keep running. But an app that needed to write a new script tag — often on a fresh install or a re-install — can no longer do it. |
| 1 March 2027 | Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefronts. | This is the real one. Every feature that still depends on a script tag goes silent on your live store. |
Reading still works throughout, which matters for the audit below: the scriptTags query and the scriptTagDelete mutation keep working, so a developer can still list and remove what is installed on your store.
What might go quiet in your store
Nobody will email you a list of affected apps, so think in visible features rather than technology. The categories most likely to sit on script tags:
- Sticky add-to-cart bars, cart drawers and cart upsells
- Currency and language switchers
- Cookie and consent banners
- Size charts, product tabs and specification popups
- Countdown timers, stock-scarcity badges and free-shipping progress bars
- Live chat and WhatsApp buttons
- Reviews widgets and trust badges
- Older analytics, heatmap and conversion-tracking snippets
- Anything a freelancer installed for you years ago and never documented
Good news worth stating plainly: recently built or rebuilt apps are very likely already on app embed blocks or web pixels, because theme app extensions are the required approach for new Shopify App Store submissions. The risk sits with old apps, abandoned apps and bespoke code.
A 30-minute audit of your store’s apps
You do not need to be technical for this. You need a list and a willingness to delete things.
- List every installed app. Open Apps in your admin and write each one into a simple sheet with three columns: app name, what it does on the storefront, still needed yes/no.
- Delete the dead weight first. Anything you no longer use, uninstall today. Every app you remove is one you never have to chase about this deadline — and one less script running on every page load.
- Open the theme editor and check the app embeds panel. In Online Store > Themes > Customize, open the app embeds section. If an app already appears there and is switched on, that app has made the move. Tick it off your list.
- Match the leftovers against the feature list above. Any app that visibly changes your storefront but does not appear as an app embed is a candidate for a question.
- Email each remaining developer one short question. Something like: “Does your app still use online store script tags, and will it be migrated to app embed blocks or web pixels before 1 March 2027?” A confident answer takes them one line. A vague answer, or silence, is itself an answer.
- Note the replies and set a review date. Put a reminder in your calendar for early January 2027 to re-check anyone who said “we are working on it”.
- Replace the weak ones early. If an app looks abandoned, the cheapest moment to swap it is now, while the current setup still works and you can compare side by side.
If a developer added custom code directly rather than through an app, ask them whether any of it creates script tags through the Admin API. That is the category most often forgotten, because no app listing reminds you it exists.
Script tag, app embed block or web pixel: the practical difference
| Script tag | App embed block | Web pixel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Used for | Anything (the old catch-all) | Features that render or change the storefront | Analytics, conversions, customer behaviour |
| Who turns it on | Nobody — automatic and invisible | You, in the theme editor | Nobody — no merchant action needed |
| Can you see it in the admin? | No | Yes, in the app embeds panel | Handled by Shopify |
| Status | No new ones from 1 Oct 2026; stops running 1 Mar 2027 | Current approach | Current approach |
The practical takeaway for you as an owner: after an app migrates, you may have to activate it once in the theme editor. Apps that add a visible element are deactivated by default so you can preview or edit it before it goes live. If a feature disappears after an app update, that panel is the first place to look — not the support inbox.
Do not confuse this with “Shopify Scripts”
Two similarly named things retired in the same era, and merchants mix them up constantly. Shopify Scripts changed checkout discounts and shipping rates; per the Shopify changelog they were deprecated on 30 June 2026. Script tags, the subject of this article, are JavaScript loaded onto your storefront pages. Different feature, different deadline, different fix.
How MaXab.ai helps you keep your storefront simple
Deadlines like this one hurt in direct proportion to how cluttered your store is. Twenty half-used apps and three layers of pasted code make a project. A clean theme, a short app list and product content you actually own make a checklist.
MaXab.ai is an AI-powered dropshipping app built directly into Salla (get a 10% discount with the code F-GTFFU30M) stores. What sets it apart from an ordinary connector app is that it is a real intermediary, not just a link between two systems: MaXab buys the product from the supplier and follows the order through to your end customer, carrying the operational and financial risk inside the Salla system, in compliance with Salla’s Holding Management System. You connect your store, browse the catalogue, and import a product with one click — no inventory, no upfront cost. Orders sync instantly and products update automatically, and order tracking is available from the free plan.
The catalogue holds more than 10,000 products and is updated continuously. Some sections are stocked inside Saudi Arabia — women’s leather bags, and men’s wallets and bags. Others, including featured products, ship directly from China to your customers: power banks, magnetic wireless chargers, wireless earbuds, smartwatches and AI toys. Built-in AI writes product titles, descriptions and SEO articles in your brand’s voice, which is the other half of a low-maintenance store: content that lives in your own product pages rather than in a third-party widget. A 24/7 AI WhatsApp sales agent and one-click product ad videos are coming soon.
Plans start free; the full breakdown is on the MaXab.ai pricing page. Alongside the app, MaXab.ai runs done-for-you store services: Salla store design, Shopify store migration and design, custom websites, and automation systems including ZATCA phase-two invoicing. If your audit ends with “this theme is held together with old widgets”, a rebuild on a current theme with proper app embeds is usually cheaper than patching around a deadline twice.
This is not the only storefront change worth a calendar entry this year: our guide to Shopify agentic storefronts covers the other direction of travel, and the Google Ads AI Max upgrade matters if your conversion tracking is about to move onto web pixels.
Frequently asked questions
Will my store break on 1 October 2026?
No. Existing script tags keep running after 1 October. What stops that day is the ability to create or update them. The date that takes features offline is 1 March 2027, when Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefronts.
How do I know whether an app uses script tags?
Ask the developer directly — one email, one question. As a quick indicator, open the app embeds panel in your theme editor: an app that appears there has already moved. An app that changes your storefront but is absent from that panel deserves a question.
Does this affect my analytics and ad tracking?
Only if the tracking still arrives through an old script tag. The supported route for analytics and conversion tracking is a web pixel, which needs no action from you. Confirm with each marketing app that its tracking runs as a web pixel, and re-check your conversion numbers after any such migration.
Eleven days is not enough time to rebuild a store, and you do not need to. It is enough to list your apps, uninstall the ones you stopped using, and send a few short emails. Do that this week and the March 2027 deadline becomes an item you tick off rather than an outage a customer tells you about.
If you would rather hand the cleanup to someone else — or you have decided this is the moment to rebuild on a current theme — talk to the MaXab.ai team and we will look at your store with you.
