Shopify Agent Checkout Is On by Default: A Gulf Guide
Shopify agent checkout now lets AI agents complete purchases by default for eligible stores. Here is what Gulf merchants should check, fix and watch next.
Shopify agent checkout lets an AI agent take a shopper from a question to a paid order without the shopper ever opening your storefront, and for eligible stores it is now switched on by default. For most Gulf merchants who sell only inside the region, nothing changes this week, because the feature is limited to shoppers in North America. But the change shows exactly what the next checkout will reward: clean product data, clear policies and delivery promises you can actually keep.
Below: what changed, who is affected, how to opt out if you sell to the US, and a checklist to get agent-ready.
What changed: Shopify agent checkout is now on by default
On 8 September 2026, the Shopify changelog announced that Meta now appears as an AI channel in the admin, next to the other agentic storefronts, and that products are shared with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog. We covered that launch in our guide to Shopify Agentic Storefronts. The bigger change is at the moment of purchase.
According to the Shopify Help Center page on selling on Meta, purchasing in direct checkout is activated by default for eligible stores. With it on, customers can start a purchase on a Meta surface such as Muse, Meta’s AI agent, and complete the order without leaving Meta. Shop Pay can appear as a wallet or checkout option in Muse when available. A Forkast report republished on Yahoo Finance dates the shift to 21 September 2026 and describes it as Shop Pay checkout enabled by default for all eligible US merchants, who stay enrolled unless they switch it off.
Three details matter for operations:
- You remain the merchant of record. Shopify says you keep managing fulfilment, returns and customer service for these orders.
- Orders land in your admin as usual. They are attributed to Meta, like any other sales channel.
- Meta is not the only agent. Shopify’s page on AI channels with direct checkout says purchasing in Microsoft Copilot is also activated by default for eligible stores that operate in the United States.
Does it reach stores in Saudi Arabia and the UAE?
Not directly, for now. Shopify states that Meta’s direct checkout is displayed only to customers based in the United States, Canada or Mexico, and that you must sell to customers there to qualify. Copilot direct checkout requires a store operating in the United States. A Riyadh or Dubai store that ships only within the GCC will not see agent orders from Muse today.
You should pay attention now if you:
- sell to North American customers from a Gulf brand;
- run a US entity or a second store aimed at US buyers;
- plan to expand cross-border within the next year.
Even if none applies, the direction goes beyond one platform. In September 2026, Mastercard announced Agent Connect, which The Paypers reports gives merchants a single connection point to participating agents, commerce services and payment providers. It launches first in the US, and the companies expected to use it include regional names such as Network International and Vodafone Egypt. Mastercard’s Agent Suite for Merchants, first introduced in January 2026, lets businesses make product details, pricing, availability and fulfilment options accessible to AI agents.
Shoppers in the region look ready. In its MENA Digital Commerce 2026 findings, Checkout.com reports that 65% of consumers in the region are familiar with agentic AI and that half say they are comfortable with AI shopping on their behalf. The same research shows what builds trust: 39% of MENA adults want to approve or reject purchases before they are final, and 38% said easy purchase reversal would make them more comfortable.
Keep direct checkout on, or turn it off?
If you sell to the US, Canada or Mexico, decide on purpose rather than by default. This table is based on what Shopify lists as supported and unsupported in Meta’s direct checkout.
| Your store | Direct checkout fit | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Simple physical products with clear variants | Good fit | Keep it on and review agent orders weekly |
| Subscriptions, bundles or customizable products | Not supported | Review these listings and sell them through your own checkout |
| Local delivery, store pickup or pickup points | Not supported as delivery methods | Make sure your shipping rates cover agent orders |
| Checkout that requires customer sign-in | Not supported | Drop the requirement or turn direct checkout off |
| Tracking that depends on custom pixels | Custom pixels not supported | Weigh the extra reach against gaps in attribution |
| Discount codes and Shopify Functions | Supported | Test that your codes and rules behave as expected |
To turn direct checkout off for Meta, follow the steps in Shopify’s help page:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic.
- Deactivate Allow Shopify to manage for me.
- Click Meta.
- Deactivate Direct checkout.
- Click Save.
Turning off direct checkout is not the same as leaving AI channels. Shopify Catalog access has its own toggle on the same screen, so shoppers can still find your products on Meta and are redirected to your online store to complete the order. The Copilot setting follows the same pattern.
The agent-ready checklist: what an agent needs to close the sale
Our earlier article on optimising product data for Google AI shopping covers titles and attributes for discovery in depth. Here the focus is the final step: what an agent must read and trust before spending a customer’s money.
- Complete your three policies. Shopify requires a Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy in Settings > Policies before your store can sell on Meta.
- Write the return policy in plain numbers. State the return window in days, the condition the item must be in, and who pays return shipping. Shopify asks merchants to keep policies current so Meta shows what your store says.
- Show delivery times as honest ranges. An agent repeats your promise to the buyer. If a product ships from abroad, say so and give the full door-to-door range, not just the handling time.
- Meet the basic Catalog requirements. According to Shopify Catalog requirements, each product needs a title, at least one image, a price above zero and an identifiable product URL, and it must not be unlisted or hidden from search engines.
- Name the product clearly. Lead the title with the product type and the attribute buyers filter on, such as size, capacity or compatibility. Let the description answer what a buyer would ask a salesperson.
- Map your custom data. If specs live in metafields, metaobjects or tags, use Shopify Catalog Mapping so agents receive the right values.
- Keep price and stock accurate. Shopify Catalog passes your title, description, options, images, price and availability to AI channels, but it can only share what your store says. When supplier stock changes, your listings must follow.
- Test the full order. Place a test purchase, confirm that shipping, discounts and taxes show before payment, and check how Shop Pay appears if you use it.
- Track agent orders separately. Filter orders attributed to Meta and compare returns and complaints with your other channels for the first month.
What Gulf merchants should watch next
- Country scope. Shopify’s Meta page currently lists the US, Canada and Mexico. Check it before you plan anything for GCC buyers.
- Payment networks. Agent Connect launches first in the US. Watch for regional rollouts through the payment providers you already use.
- Buyer controls. Checkout.com found that a third of MENA shoppers want clear spending limits they can set and adjust. Keep your totals clear at every step.
- Returns on agent orders. Because you stay the merchant of record, every agent sale is your return and your support ticket.
How MaXab.ai helps you get agent-ready
Agents favour complete product pages and true delivery promises. MaXab.ai helps with both, with one clarification: MaXab.ai works with stores on Salla (get a 10% discount with the code F-GTFFU30M), not Shopify.
- AI product content. MaXab.ai’s AI writes product titles, descriptions and SEO articles in your brand voice, specific copy that agents and shoppers can both read.
- One-click import. Connect your Salla store, browse a catalog of more than 10,000 products that is updated continuously, and add products with one click, with no inventory and no upfront cost. Prices and quantities update automatically.
- A real intermediary. MaXab.ai buys the product from the supplier and follows the order until it reaches your customer, so you do not deal with suppliers or shipping yourself.
- Delivery windows you can publish. Featured products ship directly from China to your customers in about 14 to 20 days in total. High-demand items stocked in Saudi Arabia usually arrive within 4 working days, and shipping to the GCC is available, usually in 15 to 21 days.
- Sections to start with. Mobile electronics, audio and smart devices ship from China, while women’s bags and men’s wallets and bags are stocked in Saudi Arabia.
If you run on Shopify and want a cleaner store before agent traffic grows, our Shopify store design and migration service can help. If you are launching on Salla, see Salla store design. You can compare plans on the MaXab.ai pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify agent checkout work for stores in Saudi Arabia or the UAE?
Not for local buyers yet. Meta’s direct checkout is shown only to customers in the United States, Canada or Mexico, and Copilot direct checkout needs a store operating in the US. Gulf stores that sell to those markets may qualify for Meta if they meet Shopify’s other requirements.
Who handles returns for orders placed through an AI agent?
You do. Shopify says you remain the merchant of record and continue to manage fulfilment, returns and customer service, so your own return policy applies.
Does turning off direct checkout remove my products from AI channels?
No. Catalog access is a separate setting. Your products can stay discoverable in Meta while shoppers finish the purchase on your online store.
Conclusion
Agent checkout being on by default is a North American change today, but the lesson travels. Your next buyer may be an AI agent reading your policies and delivery times before any person sees your homepage. Fix those now and you will be ready when agent checkout reaches the Gulf. To get AI-written product content and honest delivery windows into your store, start with MaXab.ai.
